Organic Winery Palmeri – The solo producer in Avola

Palmeri winery is owned by a Swiss couple with long experience in organic viticulture in Switzerland. They decided to bring the same tradition to south Sicily and found early 2000 the perfect location dated year 1400 in Avola, south Sicily, just approximately one hour drive from Catania.

The vineyards are in one of the warmest areas in Sicily but thanks to mixed soil of clay, sand and limestone, they manage to produce fresh acidic wines. Vineyards are located on hills where some sea breeze reaches daily to bring needed air to the vines.

Palmeri winery is dedicated to organic produce and what more stands out is that they do two grape selections; one in the field and a second in the winery to use the absolute best grapes for wine produce. And almost all work from pruning to labeling is done by hand. Not only do they produce wine, but also almonds, lemons and we picked some bananas before we left for breakfast smoothies.

To this date:

– 12 hectars of vineyards

– 60,000 bottles/ year

Red grapes; Nero D’Avola, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

White grapes; Moscato, Grillo, Chardonnay
